5 Tips For Emails That Engage

Updated: May 26, 2021

This may surprise you, but email marketing is still one of the most effective ways to reach your target audiences.

An email packed with timely and effective content gives readers great value. It tells stories that help keep us connected, even if we’re working from home.

In this blog post, we’re sharing five helpful tips to creating more engaging emails:

1. Keep Your List Current

Start by keeping your email list current and accurate, because even the best content does nothing if your customers or members don’t receive it.

2. Personalization

A big trend for email in 2021 is personalization — another key reason for keeping your mailing list up-to-date.

3. Content Is Key

Create content that meets the needs of your audience and grabs their interest. Unions: share profiles of new members. Associations: update or educate members on issues they are passionate about. Businesses: tell the stories behind your products or share tips on getting the best value from them.

4. Multi-Platform Layouts

Make sure your content works on phones, tablets and desktops so people can read it anytime, anywhere.

5. Plan Content Carefully

Here are some ideas for this step:

  • Create a Content Team of three or four employees who know your audience well. Unions and associations might invite volunteers from their memberships.

  • Set small, achievable publication goals for the next 12 months, such as issuing a newsletter or update every 60 days.

  • Hold a team brainstorming session for content ideas for the year ahead. Are there major milestones to showcase, key topics to cover, or trends to explore? Can you update existing content or repurpose online content as an email?

  • Schedule one topic for each month. Outline the stories you want to tell, and identify how best to tell them: as a blog post, a video, a testimonial, an infographic, an Instagram story, or something else?

  • Determine which Content Team member will be responsible for each topic. Set a deadline of 30 to 45 days to complete each piece.

  • Schedule regular Content Team meetings. Planning ahead and pre-scheduling ensures you always have fresh content — but also helps you respond to unexpected events impacting your readers, such as COVID-19.

Creating content that consistently engages, informs and entertains is a process. It takes time, discipline and focus. But when you craft content that resonates with readers, it becomes a powerful tool for engaging your customers or members.
